SAY OVERVIEW
On June 1, 1967, a meeting was held at the Evendale office of the McGregor-Brunswick Sporting Goods Company to investigate the possibility of introducing organized youth soccer the greater Cincinnati Ohio area. This meeting would be the flash point for a grassroots movement that would sweep across the nation.
In mid-September 1967, a kickoff program was held at Lockland Stadium. Many local celebrities attended, including Skipper Ryle; George Smith, Athletic Director of the University of Cincinnati; Judge Keating; Pat Harmon; Jack Moran; Vice-Mayor Ruehlmann and mayors of other communities participating in the program. This was the start of the Soccer Association for Youth (SAY Soccer). In these early days of SAY Soccer there were a total of 27 teams, with about 400 players. The SAY program has experienced a steady evolution of increased player numbers and an ever growing repituar of member services.
Today SAY Soccer provides its membership with organizational and administrative assistance as well as a comprehensive grassroots soccer support structure. SAY is home to 155,000 plus players, over 36,000 coaches, 5000 referees and countless volunteers. Operating in 32 states and Washington DC, the SAY Soccer philosophy is simple; every child plays at least one half of every game with leagues forming balanced teams and divisions. “Kids having fun” above all else is what we firmly believe in.
